Is Cannabis on your travel itinerary?
As more and more states legalize cannabis, opportunities in traditional areas like hospitality and tourism are attracting entrepreneurs focused on cannabis infused experiences. From art classes to bus tours visiting local dispensaries and growing facilities, cannabis themed events are all becoming popular with tourists.
Colorado pioneered cannabis focused tourism, with Colorado Cannabis Tours offering an $89 tour that “includes visits to two dispensaries, after which on-board consumption of purchases is encouraged” as well as the Puff, Pass & Paint class, a $49 BYOC tour that “includes teacher guidance, art supplies, and a canvas to take home.”
In California, “West Coast Cannabis Tours, in San Diego, offers various tours and classes, including an exclusive tour of a 32,000-square foot growing facility ($99).” And cannabis social clubs and lounges are popping up in West Hollywood and some parts in San Francisco.
Nevada is in the mix too, with Herbology Tours, a daily 3-hour “Herbology 101” experience, where “well-informed guides share literature and knowledge during stops at a dispensary, a kitchen where cannabis edibles are made, and even a cannabis art museum.”
Alaska is also joining the tourism wave as the first state allowing consumption lounges attached to dispensaries. Mitchell Knottingham of Juneau Cannabis Tours got involved early to be ready for lounge approval, which may happen as early as mid-July.
In this growing industry for the hospitality and tourism market, it’s an exciting time to envision what’s next. Maybe cannabis flights and food pairings? Where will the next Napa Valley for “cannabis sommeliers” be?
