Drug Policy Advocates Share the Same Goal of Wanting Fair, Equitable Cannabis Reform!

Advocates around the country have put a human face on cannabis reform, sharing the common goal of fairness and equitability.

Last Wednesday, Members of Congress heard testimony from legal, health, and industry experts about the social benefits of cannabis legalization, the rise of cannabis arrests in the US and the need to remove cannabis from the Controlled Substance Act as soon as possible.

By demonstrating to lawmakers the significant overlap of cannabis reform and racial injustice, Wednesday’s hearing clearly underscored the wealth of knowledge that reform advocates and experts can provide.

To honor this historic hearing and address the underlying concerns, drug reform advocate groups announced their formation of a new coalition, “Marijuana Justice Coalition”, which includes the ACLU, Center for American Progress, Center for Law and Social Policy, Drug Policy Alliance, Human Rights Watch, Immigrant Legal Resource Center, Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, Leadership Conference on Civil & Human Rights, NORML, and Students for Sensible Drug Policy.

As a growing industry, the implications of cannabis reform have the potential to further the progress already made with longstanding social issues and inequalities.
